That book trailer, though.
Late last year, I had the pleasure of reading ‘Artificial Light’, the third novel in Nathan Wall’s Evolution of Angels series. While I hadn’t read the first two in the series, I found that this book stood well on its own. It’s a sci-fi/fantasy, though I felt it landed a little more on the sci-fi side. The author handled the extensive cast of characters and many interconnected plots deftly, which is quite a feat – seriously, this book has A LOT happening.
Firstly we have Jarrod, who has that whole ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ thing going on – only Mr Hyde, in this case, likes to rip the soul from anyone who happens to be standing nearby and then consume it. (That’s him in the trailer – quite the charmer, no?) Jarrod, being one of the good guys, doesn’t really want to kill all his friends, but more and more that seems like it’s out of his control. Plus he’s got a bunch of people after him, looking to take him out of the game for good. That’s kind of an oversimplification of the plot, as all synopses are, but you get the gist. If you want to know more, buy the damn thing.
One of the unifying themes of the novel is that you can’t really tell who is good and who is evil. OK, so there are a couple of crazy homicidal maniacs that come to mind, but generally the characters are a mix of light and dark. (Besides, even the maniacs have their reasons.) This was one of the most interesting parts of the novel for me – seeing just how far characters would go to achieve their goals. And, well, some of them go pretty damn far.
I don’t know how much more I can write without getting into spoilers, which is not what I’m here for. What I am here for is to tell you that this is a great book, and that you should go and preorder it now. It’s what all the cool kids are doing.
(I received a free copy of this book.)
