In my book, Losing Your Head, I talk briefly about my fictional character’s interactions with Australia’s social security establishment, Centrelink. This description is drawn directly from my own experiences there. Yes, I was once investigated for fraud because an employee there made a typo and had to live without my government allowance for two months while the inquiry took place. Yes, I ate a lot of two-minute noodles and raided my piggy bank for rent money during that period. It was not a fun time. But when I went there yesterday? I think they’ve hit a new low. This one goes out to all my friends who are/have ever been on government welfare. It’s totally necessary and I’m so glad it exists, but oh my goodness – why does it have to be so darn ridiculous? Is it like this across the world? I’m genuinely interested to know.
